Officially launched on July 29th, 2015, the Windows 10 operating system has already been downloaded over 15 million times. Aside from the fact that users can download Windows 10 for free, some wonder why Windows 10 is so much better than Windows 7 or 8. So, is Windows 10 the OS PC users have been waiting for? We think it’s pretty good, here’s why:
First: the cost. Although some users will not get the free download of Windows 10, the majority will be able to upgrade at no cost. Forbes shared that, “on paper this is a great deal because Windows 10 is not cheap and ‘Windows 10 Home’ and ‘Windows 10 Pro’ editions retail for $119 and $199 respectively.”
Next: longer support. Microsoft has decided that if you download the latest version of Windows, they will support it for longer than they had previously for Windows 7 and 8 in regards to Mainstream Support and Extended Support.
The flexibility and universal apps on Windows 10 is unlike anything created before. It allows the OS to, “run across all future Microsoft devices from desktops and laptops, to hybrids, tablets, and smartphones.”
Serious gamers: listen up! Windows 10 provides DirectX12, and initial reports suggest it will bring a 30-40% performance gain over DX11. Furthermore, Windows 10 allows for game streaming from an Xbox One, as the controllers are compatible. Windows 7 and 8 never have and never will have access to DX12 or streaming from Xbox.
Cortana is Windows 10’s secret. She is a voice assistant, like Apple’s Siri, which is also located on Windows Phones. Cortana responds to any voice command and reacts quickly to everything, whether it is internet searches or even a actual task, like creating a calendar event, on Windows 10.
Edge is Microsoft’s version of Chrome. Although it is still in the works of reaching its full potential, it is significantly faster than Internet Explorer, and only available on Windows 10.
One feature that stands out to me is Windows 10’s virtual desktop capabilities. “These allow users without multi-monitor setups to create multiple virtual desktops which are handy for splitting usage between work and leisure.”
Lastly, Windows 10 security greatly outshines Windows 7 and 8. With several new features, such as the ‘Device Guard’ and ‘Windows Hello,’ in addition to the automatic updates, your computer will always be protected and up to date.
