Checking in with Foursquare – SMB Style

foursquareWe’re not just checking into hotels anymore. In fact, now, no matter where you are, you can “check in” and let your friends know what you're up to. Foursquare describes itself as the “app that helps you and your friends make the most of where you are," and is used by 30 million people worldwide - amounting to millions upon millions of “check ins” each and every day. So why should you care about Foursquare? When people are checking in, they’re not just announcing cross streets, they're checking in to YOUR business. Additionally, they're writing free, widely visible reviews on your products and services. In fact, they can give your business an "out of 10" rating, posting pictures, and even suggesting it to friends right in the moment. The real question shouldn't be "Why should I care?" but rather, "How can I use Foursquare to my advantage?" You may be surprised to find that your business is probably already on Foursquare. Any user can check in to your business - putting you "squarely" on the map. Becoming involved by putting accurate, detailed information about your business into place including:
  • a current address
  • phone number
  • business name
  • flattering description
  • hours of operation
  • menu (if applicable)
  • social media links
  • additional contact information.
Not only that, but did you know you can also advertise on Foursquare with pop up ads (targeted at local customers)? You can even leverage your presence by posting special deals to entice new and repeat business. Also, when an individual checks in to a business on Foursquare, it is logged and stored. So, when they become a business's most frequent visitor, they are dubbed “Mayor.” In other words, that mayor is your most valuable customer, so be sure to reward that person well! Foursquare will suggest your business to other users if it matches their interests and is located near similar check-in points. Like every social media tool, Foursquare can be a great asset if used correctly. Don't miss the opportunity. Update your page frequently and do not hesitate to interact with your users.
