Gmail’s Hidden Talents
Gmail is a free, cloud-based, webmail service that is backed by the powerful Google. It is considered one of the world’s most powerful and well-built tech tools, but you might be surprised to learn there's more to Gmail than you think. CNN shared a handful of different ways in which you can customize your Gmail account through the Settings and Labs tabs, and also through ways that have been built in by third party developers. Here's a look at how you can take your Gmail game to the next level.
First, you can schedule messages to send automatically, or choose to read them later. Prescheduled messages can be scheduled to sent at your convenience. This is helpful if you know in advance that you will not be available during the time that makes the most sense to send an email. With this tool, you can either send up to 10 free prescheduled emails a month, or pay $5 a month for unlimited. Additionally, you can “snooze” emails, too. This means that you can schedule emails to pop back up again at the later time or date you set it to.
With the 'track readers' function, you can find out if the email you sent was actually read, or if the recipient’s excuse of “I never saw it” is actually true. Have you ever clicked send and immediately wished you could take it back? Well, now you can. One of the hidden tools of Gmail allows you to” blow up” your emails. You can set an email to self-destruct, or simply undo your send.
Another set of tools allows you to be more productive, one being a built in to-do list right on the side of your Gmail (for Chrome and Firefox browsers). Whether you make your own task, or turn a message into a task, you can easily connect it to your Google calendar and contacts. Further, you can even schedule appointments. CNN explained that, “Gmail Labs has a feature that pulls in your Google Calendar next to your inbox for easy scheduling.”
This next tool is our favorite: you can now work offline! Gmail Offline allows you to both read and reply to emails without having internet connection. You can also sign up for AwayFind and pay Gmail to text you when you receive an email, rather than constantly refreshing your browser. Something unique about this is that you can also tell the app to only alert you if certain people send you an email.
