Insurance Provider Anthem Hit By Massive Data Breach
Another day, another data breach. This time, the nation’s second-largest health insurance company, Anthem Inc.; as many as 80 million customers may be affected.
What’s been stolen? Hackers broke into Anthem’s computer system to obtain customer’s (both current and former) personally identifiable information including names, email addresses, birthdays, medical IDs, social security numbers, street addresses, employment information, and income data. Wednesday’s attack on Anthem Insurance results in the largest health care breach to date.
Fortunately, neither credit card information, nor actual medical information appears to have been stolen.
Anthem has established a website,
www.anthemfacts.com, where members can access information about the breach. There is also a toll-free number for current and former members to call,
877-263-7995.
Customers whose information has been stolen should report any suspected instances of identity theft to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center at
www.ic3.gov.
The Anthem Insurance Breach comes as yet another stark reminder of the absolute need for systemic changes to our Internet and data security.
