Mobilegeddon? Google’s Latest Algorithm Change Hits Hard
We warned you it was coming, now "Mobilegeddon" is here.
Beginning Tuesday April 21, Google is launching an algorithm change to favor websites that are mobile-friendly.
This means people who use Google for search on their mobile devices may not find many of their favorite sites at the top of the rankings, and many businesses around the world may discover their search ranking has been downgraded. Websites that display links that are hard to click or force users to scroll horizontally will also be docked.
The update will not affect results from desktop searches.
As mobile has become more dominant, Google wants consumers to find "content that's not only relevant and timely, but also easy to read and interact with on smaller screens." As the world's most widely used search engine and significant website traffic generator, Google's word is bond. Meaning website owners will have little choice but to adapt to mobile-first and responsive practices.
Worried about your website? Google has a
"Mobile-Friendly" test page where you can check the state of your site for yourself.
If your website doesn't pass the test, contact your web host. Most hosters will have tools in place to help with the transition.
NewtekOne will provide a complementary review of your website and provide step-by-step instructions on how to make sure your website passes the test.
If you're a small business, it is important to embrace mobile-friendly and responsive design practices as soon as possible.
