Oculus Rift Preorders Are Now Open

[caption id="attachment_22939" align="alignright" width="300"]oculus-rift (Oculus VR, LLC)[/caption] It should come as no surprise that the age of VR is finally within our grasps. The first big test to see if the public is ready to embrace the new technology begins with pre-orders for the consumer version of the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. A really key detail of Oculus’ launch, which had been withheld until yesterday, was the price. We now know that Facebook (which bought Oculus Rift in 2014 for $2 billion) will be selling the hot new device for $599. At that price point, which will seem like a steal to some and highway robbery to others, will be a sizeable factor in determining who’s going to be an early adopter. For now, the Oculus Rift will remain out of reach for most casual buyers. On top of the $600 price-tag, users will need a computer capable of powering the device, like a high-end gaming computer. Pre-orders come bundled with two free games, Lucky’s Tale and EVE: Valkyrie, an Xbox One controller, and all of the necessary cables to get the headset started. Oculus Rift is set to ship out in March 2016.
